Shein<\/strong><\/a> has opened its first physical store in Paris last week and gay Paree is not entirely happy! Now I don\u2019t need to tell you who Shein are! The Singapore-based fast-fashion giant knocking out shoddy, plastics-based clobber as cheap as chips all over the planet has pissed off the French fashion industry and the gloves are on! The French branch of the OECD(that\u2019s the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development don\u2019t you know) have accused Shein of both human and environmental violations and sought legal measures to penalise all fast-fashion companies. In the last three months alone Shein has been fined the handsome sum of nearly 200 million euros for consumer infractions, fines the company is contesting.<\/p>

Traditional French fashionistas are crying a collective, clenched-fist Putain! at the Chinese outfit. Historically defining design, longevity and style they have been affronted on their own doorstep by an ethic that believes in \u201cknock it out cheap cos\u2019 it\u2019s only going in the bin\u201d. Meanwhile the \u201chorreur\u201d was exasperated by the site of hordes of Parisians leaving the new store arms laden with \u201cbargains\u201d or \u201ctut\u201d, depending on whose side you\u2019re on.<\/p>

So why is a company like Shein so popular? Aren\u2019t we worried about the planet as long as we\u2019re getting a bargain? Do snobby designers actually deserve to have their trends copied and mass-produced in materials that aren\u2019t meant to last? Do we no longer put value on the clothes we wear? It would seem our attitude to clothes has slacked off over the years,(as has much else). Previous generations invested well, cared for and mended clothes they took pride in. Does our modern ease at disregarding a jumper equate to our disregard for ourselves and our environment?<\/p>
