Whilst strutting your stuff in an old Arsenal shirt, cut up and retied together so that your boobs are hanging out, might appeal to some (?!) the average Jill about town just wants a comfy t-shirt that\u2019s a bit of fun or show of patriotism and lets everybody know who your team is. Whilst I\u2019m all for a bit of recycling and creativity the latest \u201cfootballcore\u201d<\/strong> trend of getting inventive with somebody else\u2019s smelly old kit might have others running for the turnstiles.<\/p>

It\u2019s fair to say that, traditionally, the replica footy shirt has been a male staple, be it worn or waved in the air, and I\u2019m not much of a fan myself, finding they stick to my post-menopausal midfield (belly) and attacking front line (yep!), which is not really the look I or the shirt sponsors are after.<\/p>

I was in the LFC official store at Anfield around the launch of the new season\u2019s kit this summer and was gobsmacked at the amount of families with kids in tow clambering to scoop up full kits and handing over ridiculous amounts of money many of them looked like they could ill-afford. \u201cArrr but yev gorra aven ye?\u201d one mother of two almost apologised when she clocked me side-eyeing her. But have we? Personally I\u2019m an independent soul and don\u2019t like to see everybody wandering around in the same clobber, especially when it\u2019s cost an arm and a leg. Whilst some would see it as, at best, community, at worst, tribalism, it reminds me of 1984<\/strong> and I find myself asking what poor Mr Orwell would make of it all.<\/p>

So what makes something fashionable? The fact that everybody is wearing it? Or is that just laziness, lack of choice, or lack of personal style? Are Gen Z hacking up vintage team shirts as a way of non-conforming whilst the creative juices of youth are still flowing? A quick AI google tells me that \u201cFashion is the popular style or practice, especially in clothing, that reflects self-expression, social status and cultural identity.\u201d Self-expression eh? Fashion is largely shoved under our noses by big companies and the media with the attitude of\u201dThis is what we\u2019ve got so this is what you\u2019re having\"!\u201d, (which reminds me of my mum at tea-time), so it\u2019s great to see young people fighting against the machine.
